Position Title
Senior Lecturer, Department of Biological Sciences

I am a proud first-generation college student from a small town in North Carolina, just north of Charlotte. In terms of college, I navigated the process of applying independently. I didn't understand much about getting into college or how to proceed through college. Once I decided on UNC Charlotte, I had no idea how to choose a major, so I came in thinking I would major in criminal justice! Obviously, that changed! During my first two years, I never asked questions in class, and I certainly never went to office hours to talk to a PROFESSOR! It was all a learning process. The most significant change for me was meeting my mentor in Biological Sciences, Dr. Jim Oliver, who instilled a love of microbiology in me. His passion for always learning inspired me! I am a better teacher, mentor, and person for having met him. My father also supported me throughout my educational journey by promoting a love of learning and encouraging me to follow my own path. I understand the barriers and uncertainty that can come from being a First-Gen student, and I hope to support, inspire, and help my students and advisees to succeed, no matter their background. Whether you are a First-generation student or not, I am here to help!
