Being a first generation college student, I had no guidance for my college experience from the beginning. I had no clue how to apply to colleges or for financial aid. I consulted my high school counselor for these answers, and she was very helpful. She gave great advice when I struggled with questions that my mom couldn’t answer. Coming in to college, I found the SAFE program and knew that would give me a leg up coming in to this unfamiliar territory. SAFE was a great way to familiarize myself with campus before move-in, make myself feel more comfortable being away from home, and find a mentor for my first year of college.

Since then, I’ve become involved on UNCC’s campus through Greek life, orientation counseling, and Gold Rush. I’ve found my place at UNCC and can truly say that it is my home. My advice to other first generation college students would be to find your resources, utilize them every year (not just your first), and get involved! The more connections you make, the more at home you’ll feel. There is a support system out there for you, you just have to find it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
