Gratitude fills me as I reflect on my journey, acknowledging the unwavering support from my parents and husband. I was the first in my family to earn a Bachelor’s, Masters, and Doctorate. Reflecting on my path, I recall pivotal programs shaping my skills and success. Beginning with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in 7th grade, Mrs. Pokorney's belief in my uniqueness set the foundation and fostered my college preparation. Transitioning to NC State University, the Transition Program supported by a TRIO Student Support Services grant offered me a comprehensive support system and Mr. Mims inquired "How bad do you want it?”. Further enriching my academic path, the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program during junior year propelled me into doctoral pursuits and research. These programs empowered me to achieve, and now, as a faculty member at UNC Charlotte, I actively engage with similar initiatives like the University Transition Opportunities Program (UTOP) and undergraduate and graduate research mentor programs on campus. I recognize the transformative power of these programs in helping individuals, especially, people of color, in achieving their aspirations. First Gen STRONG!!
